Zada Elizabeth Burrell
February 21, 1923 — August 9, 2018
Zada Elizabeth Zondervan was born February 21, 1923 in Monroe, Iowa the daughter of George Lincoln Zondervan and Ruth Brockett Droz Zondervan.
Zada’s parents would later move to Pleasantville, Iowa where they operated Zondervan’s Café from 1929 to 1950. Zada started her singing career in the café and has sang her entire life. She was a member of the Sweet Adeline’s for 65 years and sang (instead of ringing a bell) for the Salvation Army at Southridge Mall for many years. She had over 100 Christmas carols committed to memory. Zada also sang for countless community events in Pleasantville, including holiday celebrations, funerals and at the nursing home. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Runnells and the Pleasantville Christian Church.
Zada was married to Jess Karns and then Bill Burrell who are both deceased. From these two marriages she raised four great children: J.D. and Douglas Karns and Becky and Larry Burrell. Zada and Bill operated the Pleasantville Bank and later Marion County Savings & Loan prior to retirement. Zada was also a world traveler; when she turned 62 she traveled around the world. She has been on 43 cruises and visited 80 countries.
Zada passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at her son J.D.’s home at the age of 95 years. Per her wishes, no services are planned.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands and sisters: Zoe Roberts and Mary Ann Luedtke.
Those left to cherish Zada’s memory include her children: J.D. and Carla Karns, Douglas and Kristie Karns, Rebecca Burrell Kilgore and Larry Burrell; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
