Yvonne Arlene “Vonnie” Romans was born February 17, 1945 in Newton, Iowa the daughter of Earl and Darlene (Maxwell) Nelson.
She was raised in Newton and graduated from Newton High School. On September 21, 1963 Vonnie was united in marriage to Samuel Eugene Romans. The couple made their home in Newton. Sam passed away on November 6, 1972. In 1986, Vonnie moved to Knoxville and has been with her life-long companion, Stephen Porter, since 1987. Vonnie was a tireless volunteer: at the Knoxville V.A. for 30 years, Women’s Relief Corp, Navy Mother’s Club of America, Degree of Pocahontas, the Marion County Red Cross and many other organizations.
In her spare time, Vonnie enjoyed sewing, planting flowers, fishing and camping. She loved getting together with friends for coffee time at local restaurants. Her greatest joy was spending time with family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids.
Vonnie passed away Monday, March 1, 2021 at Comfort House, in Pella, Iowa, at the age of 76 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Samuel and siblings: Arlene Crocker, Elizabeth Ticnor, Dorothy Mickle and Earl “Sonny” Nelson.
Those left to cherish Vonnie’s memory include her long-time companion, Stephen Porter; children: Angela (Randall) Edwards of Fairfield, California, Kimberly Romans of Knoxville, Anthony (Carrie) Romans of Paducah, Kentucky, Amanda (Josh) Greubel of Dewitt, Iowa and Melodie (Chris) Smith of Bondurant, Iowa; siblings: Carmen (Robert) VanderLeest of Newton, Iowa, Anita (Doug) Trotter of Newton, Iowa, Kathy Slavens of California, Regina Slavens of California and Patricia (Fred) Ortiz of Aurora, Colorado; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Allen (Shannon) Romans of Newton, Erica (Con) Edwards-Thomas of Fairfield, California, Darla (Brett) Burr of Vacaville, California, Sonya Moore of Knoxville, Taylor (Baylee) Romans of Lufkin, Texas, Hunter Romans (US Marine Corps), LeeAnna Romans of Paducah, Kentucky, Benen and Nya Greubel of Dewitt, Marjorie and Ricky Smith of Bondurant, Andrew, Jakob, Noah and Zach Burr all of Vacaville, California, Xavier, Omon and Xylia Edwards-Thomas all of Fairfield, California and Shelara and Lastacia Moore of Knoxville and many other family members and friends.




A memorial service for Yvonne “Vonnie” Romans, age 76 of Knoxville, will be held Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Bybee & Davis Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Vonnie has been cremated and burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date.
