Vicki May King was born June 18, 1953 in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Elton Dale and Betty Margaret (Wilson) King.
She graduated from Southeast Warren High School and attended John Brown University in Arkansas, then transferred to and graduated from Simpson College with a Bachelor of Music Education. Vicki taught music at Grand Valley Community Schools in Kellerton before taking a job in the Knoxville Community School District where she had an amazing career. She taught middle school band and choir, retiring in 2008. Teaching was a passion, not a job, for Vicki and she was highly regarded by her students and the Knoxville community.
In addition to teaching, Vicki was active in the Knoxville Community Chorus, having been a director for numerous seasons. She also enjoyed KACT and especially liked being in the musical Nunsense. Vicki was also part of a barbershop quartet since she was a teenager. The quartet performed on the Bill Riley Talent Show and was still active until a few years ago. The members of the quartet have remained close friends over the years. Vicki had a beautiful alto singing voice and was frequently asked to sing for weddings and funerals. She also loved to travel with her sister Kathy, especially to DisneyWorld, the Wisconsin Dells and the Ozarks. Her last trip was a cruise to Alaska with one of her closest friends in July 2018. Vicki also loved having her nieces and nephew stay with her, and they even were able to join Vicki and Kathy on some of their travels.
Vicki passed away Thursday, June 29, 2023 at MercyOne, in Des Moines, at the age of 70 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Betty; sister, Kathy and brother, Kevin.
