Velda Dunn was born August 6th 1918 in Swan, Iowa the daughter of Ernest and Gladys (Conley) Viers.

She attended Bunker Hill Country School and graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1935. She earned her teaching certificate from Simpson College. Later, while teaching full time, she took classes at Drake University and received her Bachelor’s degree.

She was united in marriage to Ivan Dunn and welcomed two sons Gary and Lary. Velda was a teacher in several schools in the Marion County area for over 40 years starting in one room schoolhouses. She spent the last several years teaching 5th and 6th grade math in Pleasantville.

Ivan and Velda lived in the Swan and Pleasantville areas. Velda moved to Indianola in later years and then to Minnesota in 2009 where Gary resides.

Velda was a member of the Christian Church in Pleasantville. She was an excellent cook and an avid reader. Reading and crossword puzzles were her favorite pastimes. She also loved to travel. She and Ivan took many road trips around the country.

Velda passed away Monday, July 29th 2024 at Eagle Street Assisted Living in Coon Rapids Minnesota at the age of 105.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ivan, son Lary, brother Jack Viers and sister Wanda Williams.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son Gary (Carmen) daughter-in-law Diane Dunn; grandchildren: Richard Dunn (Ellen) of Wells River Vermont, Robert Dunn of Honolulu Hawaii, Shannon Dunn of Minneapolis Mn, Kimberly Guilford (Doug) of Indianola, Cynthia Smith of Indianola and Jess Dunn (Deb) of Grimes Ia. Great-grandchildren Mariel Dunn, Arjen and Madeleine Dunnhammer, Sarah and Ian Smith, Jackson Guilford and Mikaela and Blake Dunn. Many nieces and nephews and their families.


Private burial will follow services.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of Webb Shadle Library.
