Dr. Steven Mott
Steven Duane Mott was born April 24, 1952, in Des Moines, Iowa to Duane and Cherry (Patterson) Mott. Steve was raised in Carlisle, Iowa, where as a very active youth, he participated in 4-H, band, and National Honor Society, and was an all-district athlete in multiple sports. Steve graduated from Carlisle High School in 1970. Steve then attended Iowa State University, where a passion for interaction led Steve toward a curriculum of science with an eye on dentistry. Steve graduated from ISU in 1973, started at the University of Iowa School of Dentistry that fall, and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1977.
While at Iowa, Steve married Karine Ann Fritsch in 1974. After a lengthy search, Steve started as a dental associate with Dr. E.V. Feldman in Knoxville, Iowa. Steve was extremely appreciative of Dr. Feldman’s leadership, both from a clinical and business perspective. Steve had a true desire to make dentistry as comfortable as possible for his patients. Every visit usually started with a “hey kiddo” or a “hey chief.”
Steve’s strong belief in community service/volunteer efforts led him to sit on numerous boards, such as the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics Foundation, the Knoxville Heritage Foundation, Thrive, and the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in helping start the Knoxville chapter of Dollars for Scholars and was an active member of the Knoxville Rotary Club until retirement. He was recognized with multiple community awards over the years. Steve also had a true calling to be a servant of the Lord. His faith in the Lord eventually led him to Celebrate Church, in Knoxville, where the fruits of the spirit continued to grow in Steve. He held positions of elder, elder board president, and wrote a curriculum for a cancer survivor support group.
In 1999, Steve was united in marriage to Tresa Lynn Leonard. This was truly another blessed time in Steve’s life, which came with accepting the challenges of raising a blended family.
Being self-employed also allowed Steve the opportunity to coach baseball at the Little League, Babe Ruth, Senior League and High School levels. Steve started as “restricted earnings” coach for Knoxville High School baseball in 1993 and was assistant coach until 2003. In 2005, Steve became the head baseball coach for Knoxville, a position he held for 7 years. After a year away, he became assistant coach for Twin Cedars for 3 years and then again at Knoxville one last time for 2 more years. In 23 years of coaching high school baseball, Steve was a part of 11 state tournament teams and two state championship teams.
In his free time, Steve adored spending time with his grandchildren, traveling with Tresa, watching sports (especially ISU) and golfing with many irreplaceable friends.
Steve passed away at the Knoxville Hospital on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, surrounded by his loving family after a 13 year, otherworldly, battle with cancer. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Duane. Those left to honor Steve’s memory are his mother, Cherry; wife, Tresa; sons Kyle (Brooke) and Kevin; stepson Brant (Nikki) Leonard; stepdaughter Brynn (Kyle) Keller and grandchildren: Prier Phillips, Ivy Mott, Eva Mott, Pryce Keller and Portlan Keller, along with many other cousins and relatives.
The family would like to thank Judd Nelson, Andrew Schmidt, Dr. J.B. Law and all the doctors, nurses, and staff at Knoxville Hospital for their unequaled support in Steve’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations or contributions be made to Celebrate Church or the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics Foundation.
