Stearly Alling Holt became absent from her body and present with the Lord on January 26, 2023, her 88th birthday. She was born in Newark, New Jersey, on January 26, 1935. The third child of Dr. Frederic A. Alling and Helen Stearly Alling. She lived in Montclair, NJ where she grew up and finished her primary and secondary education. She raced the family sailboat in Quantuck Bay, Long Island, New York, and won many races in the junior category.


She graduated from Wellesley College in 1956 majoring in Zoology with a minor in English. She then went on to obtain her medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1960, one of twelve women in her class. Her internship was completed at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, Vermont, and she completed her third year residency training in psychiatry at the V.A. Hospital in Lyons, N.J. where she worked. She co-authored multiple articles and publications, including the Alcohol Treatment Manual for the Veterans Administration Hospital System. She also was an educator through several professional opportunities, including as a clinical instructor in psychiatry at the Chicago Medical School and supervisor of residents at Loyola Medical School in addition to conferences and lectures at multiple medical institutions and professional conferences. She enjoyed her work with the Veterans Affairs Hospitals at the Lyons V.A. Medical Center in Lyons, New Jersey; at the Hines V.A. Hospital in Chicago, Illinois; at the Lebanon V.A. Medical Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and the Knoxville V.A. Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa. She retired from full-time work for the Knoxville V.A. Hospital at age 65, yet she would later resume working with the V.A. until the closure of the Knoxville V.A. Hospital.


She married Lloyd M Holt of the Chicago area. They had two daughters Kirsten and Heidi.


Born into an Episcopalian Family, she loved the Lord. She enjoyed sailing and gave to many charities. She attended NARFE luncheons and enjoyed going to farmer’s markets, and Faith Baptist Church. She enjoyed swimming, knitting, reading, keeping in touch with people she worked with at the VA, and spending time with friends and family at her time-share on Anna Maria Island in Florida. She remained active throughout her life into retirement. When she first retired, she became a lifeguard for the pool at the Knoxville Recreation Center.


She loved her two daughters - Kirsten (Andrew) Meyers and the late Heidi (Rob) Willis; her grandchildren Kirsten (Thomas) Merritt, Natasha (Jason) Scheer, and Robert Lyons; her three great grandchildren Benjamin Willis, Samantha Scheer, and Carson Scheer. She was preceded in death by her daughter Heidi Willis, her sister Susan Alling Miller, her brothers Dr. Frederic A. Alling and Wilson S. Alling, and her parents Dr. Frederic A. Alling and Helen Stearly Alling.
