Shirley was a farmer of land and cattle and also worked as a bookkeeper at Myers Insurance Agency helping to prepare income taxes.
He was a familiar face at elections serving as Chairperson of his precinct polls. He was active in his church, Trinity Lutheran Church, Knoxville, serving in many offices-Trustee, Chairman, Elder, Treasurer and Delegate. He also volunteered with the Pleasantville Senior meal site and Pleasantville Lions Club.
Shirley lived with and cared for his mother until her death at 94 years. For nine years he lived in Knoxville with his oldest brother Roland. They were great companions for each other and were able to go places together. After Shirley’s surgery, Roland was his caretaker and later Shirley cared for Roland until he passed away at 97. Shirley was known as a gentle, quiet man with a good heart and quick wit.
For several years he enjoyed bowling on leagues and taking annual fishing trips to Canada with family and friends. Family reunions were another enjoyable time he tried to attend every year. One year he was able to take a memorable bus trip to the northwest through Canada and the states.
He had recently moved to assisted living at Windsor Manor in Indianola where he enjoyed his apartment, walks in the courtyard, puzzles, the new friends he made, the caring and helpful staff and having his meals prepared for him. Shirley was thankful for all the prayers and kind wishes from family and friends and his church family at Trinity Lutheran Church and the faithful visits of his Pastor, Rev. Joel Picard.
Shirley was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Sr. and Martha (Timm) Horn, brothers Roland and wife Bernice, Knoxville; Frank Jr. and wife Lois, Indianola; Ervin, Osceola; Richard, Morrison, IL; sister Thelma Taylor, Des Moines. Brothers-in-law Carroll Buzzard, Hartford; Ron Glick, Indianola and nephew Martin Horn, Nevada.
Shirley is survived by sisters Lillian Buzzard, Hartford; Sandra Skinner (Jim), Lacona; and Susan Glick, Indianola; sister-in-law Sondra Horn, Morrison, IL and 24 nieces and nephews.
Shirley went to celebrate with the Lord on Christmas Day 2022 and those who share this faith in our Savior Jesus Christ look forward to a reunion with him in heaven.
