Sarah Ellen Hayes was born July 25, 1933 in Des Moines, Iowa the daughter of Samuel Scott McDaniel and Mary Gladys (Williams) McDaniel.
Sarah and her sister, Linda lived in Reasnor and Des Moines until moving to Knoxville when Sarah was in Jr. High. She graduated with the Knoxville High School Class of 1951. Following graduation she worked for American Mutual Life in Des Moines. On January 26, 1952 Sarah was united in marriage to Harry Russell “Rusty” Hayes, Jr. and the couple made their home in Knoxville. Sarah and Rusty were blessed with two sons, Mark and Matthew. In 1973 Rusty passed away from a sudden heart attack. Sarah worked for Northwestern Bell for 15 years before taking a job at Iowa State Savings Bank in Knoxville. She retired from the bank at the age of 62.
When they were younger, Sarah and Rusty loved to dance, and they cleared the floor when they jitter bugged. Matt and Mark’s interests and goal were focal points of her life. Over the years, she traveled to many of Mark’s racing events across Iowa and several different states. Sarah loved her grandkids, especially as little ones. She also enjoyed the family dogs and gardening.
Sarah passed away Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Country View Manor, in Sibley, Iowa, at the age of 88 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Rusty.
Those left to cherish Sarah’s memory include her sons: Mark (Cindi) of Mt. Pleasant and Matt (Kim) of Sibley; grandchildren: Jill, Angie, Jamie and Jacob; great-grandchildren: Sienna, Dylan and Aria; sister, Linda Elscott of Sebring, Florida; two sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Rowley and Mari Jo Hodges and many other family members and friends.


In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church.
