Samuel Enus Rathmel was born March 30, 1933 in Washington County, Iowa the son of Frank and Nora (Hole) Rathmel.
He was raised in the Washington and Iowa City areas. As a young man, Sam worked as a farmer. On May 31, 1966 he was united in marriage to Coramarie Parker in Diamond City, Arkansas. Sam worked for the University of Iowa Hospital Carpenter Shop and owned his own carpentry business for many years. In 1983 the couple moved to Knoxville and Sam owned and operated the Gambles Store. He spent most of his life as a carpenter, building and remodeling many homes. Sam had also worked as a special Deputy for the Johnson County Sheriff and as a jailer for the Marion County Sheriff.
Sam passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the Griffin Nursing Center at the age of 81 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Cheryl and a sister, Freda Enfield.
Those surviving Sam are his wife, Cora of Knoxville; children: Jerry Rathmel of Knoxville, Gary (Ann) Rathmel of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Cynthia Hall of Anchorage, Alaska; sister, Rita of Versailles, Missouri; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

Sam has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the First United Methodist Church and the HCI Care Services.
