Roland Ernest Horn died January 10, 2021 at West Ridge Specialty Care Center under the care of Suncrest Hospice.
Roland Ernest Horn was born June 28, 1923 to Frank and Martha (Timm) Horn in Lincoln Township, Iowa County, Iowa. He graduated from Beech High School in 1941. He married Berniece Draper on June 10, 1944. They were married for 68 years before Berniece passed in 2012. They had three children: Christina, Debra and Martin.
Roland served in the Army with the 7th Calvary Regiment during World War II in the South Pacific Theater. He survived the sinking of the LST 577 ship that was transporting the troops from New Guinea to Leyte, Philippine Islands. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the APT Ribbon. When he returned from the war, Roland served in the Active Army Reserves until he retired in 1983 as Chief Warrant Officer (W-4). He graduated from Simpson College in 1949 and was employed as an accountant at John Morrell in Ottumwa until he was transferred in 1972 to St. Paul, Minnesota and then to Chicago to join the corporate office as Regional Credit Manager. He retired after 36 years of service. After retiring, Roland and Berniece moved to Trenton, Missouri on a lake because he loved to fish. He traveled to Canada for 2 weeks each year with family and friends to fish until he could no longer make the trip. The couple made many trips south for the winter including spending time in Arizona and Texas. They especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Roland also enjoyed getting together with his brothers and sisters once a month to play cards and visit.
Roland spent a lot of time volunteering for a variety of programs including as a Sunday School Teacher and Elder at his church, coaching a little league ball team and as a Cub Scout leader. He would do anything that people needed him to do. He always thought of other people and would help when he was needed. He loved spending time with his children and their families.
Roland is survived by his daughters, Christina Cardenzana of Albia and Debra (James) Gibson of Davenport; grandchildren: Andrea (Pat) Barnes, Melissa (Loren) Sisler, Felicia, James, Jr. and Kimberly Gibson; great-grandchildren: Emma, Abby, and Lily Barnes, Erika and Kyle Sisler, Olivia (Michael) Poole, Tobias, Jordan and Alexia Gibson; great-great grandson, Dominic Poole; brother, Shirley; sisters: Lillian Buzzard, Sandra (Jim) Skinner and Susan Glick; sister-in-law, Sondra Horn and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; son, Martin; great-granddaughter, Sydnie Gibson; brothers: Frank, Jr., Richard, and Ervin Horn; sister, Thelma Taylor; sister-in-law, Lois Horn and brother-in-law, Ronald Glick.




A funeral service for Roland Horn, age 97 of Knoxville, will be held Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Pleasantville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Saturday. Memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date. Masks and social distancing are required.
