The world lost a gentle, kind man on January 30, 2015. Richard (Dick) Glen Miller left this earth and finally breathes easier.
Dick was born March 27, 1933 to Mervin Glen and Alberta Marie (Shupe) Miller, in Melcher, Iowa. He was raised in Melcher, graduated from Melcher High School, and attended AIB.
He joined the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Alaska. Dick's love for the service was ever prevalent, so he became involved in local Military events and proudly assisted with the “Avenue of Flags” at Graceland Cemetery, in Knoxville.
After his tour of duty in the U.S. Army, he started working for Maytag, in Newton, where he lived with his cousins Calvin and Ruth Logue. On July 11, 1958 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Phillips at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Melcher. The couple moved to Knoxville to start a family. Dick’s career started in the factory and quickly moved into the engineering department. After 31 years of service, he retired at age 49 as a Methods Engineering Analyst. Dick had many other “careers” after his retirement in 1982, which included construction and real estate, but he really found joy in assisting with Funeral Services for various Funeral Homes in Knoxville.
Dick was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, in Knoxville, Lamplighters for Aid Association for the Lutherans (Thrivent), previously served as Trinity Lutheran Youth Group Leader and Elder. He was the president of the Senior board until the Fall of 2014 and was recognized with Marilyn for all their service to the Meals On Wheels program. He was also was a member of Knoxville High School Band Boosters and coached Pee Wee and Little League Baseball. Dick took pride and supported all the activities his children were involved in.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mervin and Alberta, his father and mother in law, Lloyd and Helen Phillips, his siblings, twin infants Olive and Gerald Miller, Dennis Miller, Dwight Miller, Rose Denio, and Roberta Riegel.
