Phillip Guy Proffitt was born April 23, 1932 in Pleasantville, Iowa the son of Guy and Bernice (Core) Proffitt.
He was raised on his family’s farm and graduated from Pleasantville High School with the Class of 1950. As a young man, Phil farmed and cut meat at Gilderbloom’s Grocery. He served in the United States Army, during the Korean War, from 1952 to 1954. On October 22, 1954, Phil married the love of his life, Dorothy Karns. The couple made their home in Pleasantville and to this union three children: Craig, Cindy and Mike were born. Phil worked at Armstrong, in Des Moines, as a tire builder and fork lift operator until his retirement in 1993. During his retirement years, he worked part-time for Vander Linden Construction.
In his spare time, Phil enjoyed fishing, camping and watching the Green Bay Packers and Iowa State Football. He also liked all types of racing, including: Sprint Car, NASCAR and Indy Car. Phil dedicated an entire room to display his extensive collection of John Deere tractors. He was active in the Pleasantville community and had been a Boy Scout Leader, served on the Centennial Committee and was a proud member of the Pleasantville American Legion. His greatest joy and pride however, was his family, he loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Phil passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at his beloved country home, at the age 84 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marilyn Shoemaker and his wife, Dorothy in 2007.
Those left to cherish Phil’s memory include his children: Craig (Mary) Proffitt of Knoxville, Cindy (Howard) Proffitt of Harvey and Mike (Jana) Proffitt of Knoxville; 7 grandchildren: Angela (Eric) Graham, Amy Heaberlin, Zach Pettyjohn, Breanna (Jeremy) Lee, Rilee Proffitt, Kendra (Jason) Love and Kandis (Corey) Pregon; 16 great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.


A Memorial Service for Phil Proffitt, age 84 of Pleasantville, will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mason Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Pleasantville American Legion Post No. 108.
