Penny Renee Heaberlin was born May 9, 1958 the daughter of Ronald and Charlotte (Chapman) Heaberlin.
Penny was raised in Pleasantville and during high school she was a cheerleader, band member, class Valedictorian, Betty Crocker Award recipient, National Merit Scholar, and National Honor Society member. Following high school, Penny received her undergraduate degree from Drake University, and shortly thereafter received her CPA. She first worked at Arthur Young Accounting and later for West Bank in Des Moines.
Penny later returned to Drake where she was the first student to simultaneously earn a law degree and an MBA - all while working full-time, teaching aerobics, and caring for her young son. Penny was a full partner at the Maslon Law Firm in the Twin Cities until her retirement in 2010. She was also an Adjunct Professor at the William Mitchell College of Law and did college admission tutoring for under-represented children. In 2021 she moved to Ankeny, Iowa to be closer to family and friends.
Penny was a prolific reader, student of history, trivia champion, and avid genealogist. She also enjoyed traveling the world, visiting fine restaurants, and attending Broadway shows. Penny was an excellent cook and was always ready to host family and friends. Above all else, Penny was a loving and caring mother who encouraged compassion and an appreciation of education in her children.
Penny passed away peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Taylor House, in Des Moines, at the age of 64.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ronald and Charlotte.
Those left to honor Penny’s legacy include her children: Adam Beier and Mary Cait Bayliss; brothers: Scott and Joel Heaberlin; and many nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
A Memorial Visitation for Penny Heaberlin, age 64 of Ankeny, will be held Saturday, March 11, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville. Online condolences may be left at
