Mary Louise DeJoode was born October 9, 1914 in Maple, Iowa the daughter of Frank and Edna Flora (Deskin) Krashowetz.
As a girl, Mary’s family lived in several locations, as her father worked for coal mining operations throughout the area. She graduated from Chariton High School and completed Normal Training. In June of 1940 she was united in marriage to Anthony DeJoode and the couple always made their home in Knoxville. Through the years Mary worked for survey companies, drove a school bus and worked in the pits at the Knoxville Raceway in addition to being a homemaker, wife and mother. During Mary and Tony’s retirement, they wintered in Apache Junction, Arizona for over 20 years.
Mary was a creative, giving, humble and artistic person. She was also a devout Catholic. In addition to being a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Altar & Rosary Society, she was active in the Befrienders Club, bridge group and a coffee group. Her greatest legacy was that of teaching her children inner strength and to be true to yourselves and to never give up.
Mary passed away on Friday, May 2, 2014 at the West Ridge Nursing & Rehab Center at the age of 99 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Darrell; husband, Tony and siblings: Lorance Krashowetz and Frances Haven.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughters: Marlene Metzgar (Tom) of Bettendorf, Iowa and Rosemary DeJoode of Tama, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Raydene DeJoode of Hayward, Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary DeJoode age 99 of Knoxville will be held on Wednesday, May 7 at St. Anthony Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church. Online condolences may be left at BertrandFuneralHomes.com. The family invites relatives and friends to return to St. Anthony’s Church Hall for lunch and fellowship following the committal service.
