Mary Jane Altes was born April 6, 1922 in Monroe, Iowa the daughter of Orville and Ethel (McCuen) Yoakum.
She was raised in the Mingo area and on January 14, 1939 Mary Jane was united in marriage to Garold Doyle Altes in Bethany, Missouri. . To this union three daughters were born. The couple first made their home in Mingo. Through the years, Mary Jane and Garold lived in Mingo, Prairie City, Marshalltown, Collins, and Des Moines before moving to Knoxville in 1956. They made their home on a farm between Knoxville and Pleasantville until Garold retired in 1976 and they moved into Knoxville. Mary Jane worked at the Griffin Nursing Center for over 30 years as C.N.A.
Mary Jane was very active in the First Assembly of God Church in Knoxville. She taught Sunday School and was an officer of the Women’s Missionaries for many years. She and Garold also enjoyed wintering in Texas during their retirement. Mary Jane had a special place in her heart for children, her home frequently had extra kids, as she was always willing to babysit for friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and servant of the Lord.
Mary Jane passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center, in Des Moines, at the age of 93 years.
In addition to her parents, Mary Jane was preceded in death by her daughter, Sue Ann; husband, Garold and three brothers: Clarence, Paul and Lloyd Dale Yoakum.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters: Shirley Bassett (Alvin) of Des Moines and Sandy Miller (Denny) of Carlisle; 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

The family invites relatives and friends to remain at the church for lunch immediately following the funeral service.
