Marlin Dean Wineland, 88, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2023. Marlin was born December 21, 1934 in Knoxville, Iowa the youngest of four children born to Jesse and Grace (Ellison) Wineland. He attended school in Flagler and Knoxville.
Marlin married Mary McDonald on June 24, 1952; they had two sons, Barry Dean Wineland and Marty Ray Wineland. They later divorced. Marlin married Carol McDonald. Although they later divorced the two remained good friends.
Marlin worked at Pella Corp as a glazer. He then went into the manufactured home business and started hauling new homes from Indiana to Iowa. He also did repairs, setups and sales of the homes until his retirement. Marlin also previously owned a skating rink and two bars in Knoxville. He owned a sprint car for many years and is a member of the Knoxville Raceway Hall of Fame. Marlin was a gifted piano and guitar player and belonged to a band that played in area bars for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and many family and friends benefited from his talents.
Marlin was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Kenneth, Dwight and Ruth Goemaat.
Those left to cherish Marlin’s memory include his sons: Marty Wineland and Barry (Cindy) Wineland and their children: Julie, Jill, Jackie Heck and K.C. Rawlings-Church; grandchildren: Alexis and Lucas Heck, Emily Nichols, Kodis and Kaya Rawlings and Cheyenne Church; significant other, Kathy Martin and family: Blaine (Sandy) Martin, Melinda (Joe) Doerhoff; grandchildren: Madison Martin (Carl Phillips), Carson Martin, Paige (David) Boucher and Morgan Doerhoff (Cory Nolte); great-grandchildren: Eleanor, Evelyn and Esther Boucher; Kathy’s sister, Suzanne Abbott and children: Jeff (Vicki) Abbott, Lorraine (Matt) Rock, and Dena (Ryan) Gross and their families; special nephew, Richard Wineland and many other family members and friends.
Marlin has been cremated and services will be announced at a later date. Private burial will be held at Pleasantville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Marion County Humane Society (P.O. Box 655 – Knoxville, IA 50138) to take care of Marlin’s beloved cats: Fritz, Cricket, Fuli, Gretchen, Tara, and Sara until they find new homes.
