Margaret Loretta “Peggy” Vance was born March 2, 1935 in rural Mahaska Couty, Iowa the daughter of Monte and Rosetta (Padgett) Vance.
She was raised and educated in Beacon, Iowa. Peggy was united in marriage to Kenneth Binns and the couple lived in Oskaloosa before moving to Knoxville. She worked for the sale barn café in Oskaloosa and at Pinky’s and the V.A. Medical Center in Knoxville. Peggy worked as a Nurse’s Aid for 20 years prior to her retirement from the V.A. Never one to sit still, Peggy bought the bar in Harvey, Iowa in 1997 and renamed it, “Peggy’s Place”. Her daughter, Cynthia continues to operate the bar.
Peggy loved her dogs and birds; she had bird feeders at her home and at her bar. She was also an avid reader. Mostly, she loved people and was a hard worker all of her life; she will be missed by many.
Peggy passed away Monday, November 25, 2024 at her home, in Harvey, Iowa, at the age of 89 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Carmen Hauenstein and sisters: Evelyn Jansen and Lee Woerdeman.
Those left to cherish Peggy’s memory include her children: Cynthia (Gene) Self, Chris (Gord) Gritters and Kenny (Deb) Binns; 12 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marion County Humane Society or to Hospice of Pella.
