Lucretia Edith Jones Spaur was born October 17, 1927 as the ninth child of Tressa Altheo Shilling Jones and John Johnathan Jones at her parents’ home near Tracy, Iowa, Mahaska County.
She attended Tracy Schools, graduating from there in May of 1944. After graduation, Lucretia moved to Washington D.C. and began working for the Department of Defense in the newly completed Pentagon for 2 years.
On July 12, 1947 she married the love of her life; Harold “Fuzz” Dale Spaur in a double wedding ceremony with their friends, Clark and LuElla Brubaker at the Methodist Church Parsonage with the Rev. Hann officiating.
She and Fuzz made their home in Tracy, Iowa. Lucretia and Fuzz were blessed with two sons; Larry Dale and Leslie Laverne. Lucretia was a dedicated mother and farm wife until she returned to the work force. Later they moved to a rural home East of Attica, Iowa; and then West of Attica, Iowa. Later they moved to Norfork, Arkansas and owned a restaurant for five years (1958-1963), when they moved back to Knoxville, Iowa. Later, In, 1967 they built their new rural home South of Knoxville, Iowa; and Fuzz returned to farming and Lucretia began working at the Bussey Bank in Bussey, Iowa. Later she transferred to the Iowa State Bank where she remained working until her first retirement. During this time, she and her sisters, Lena, Louella and Louretta worked part time during the Knoxville Raceway Racing Season in the ticket office until the Raceway installed new electronic ticket system. She also worked at the Knoxville School System for several years in the kitchen at the Elementary schools. She later retired from the school system.
Lucretia and Fuzz led an active life traveling each year to Bagnal Dam and Osage Beach for many fun filled years with their close friends. Each week they played cards with her sister Lena and husband Breezy Bankus, until his passing. She and Fuzz spent several years on Saturday nights for steak night and dances. Her life was fulfilled as a wife, mother, daughter, sister, Grandma, Great Grandma and Great-Great Grandma. She enjoyed attending all her grandchildren’s events and activities whenever possible. She enjoyed many exciting, fun trips with her sisters traveling to family cemeteries, lunches, and even mushroom hunting.
Lucretia and Fuzz’s extended family and friends included their farming, work and social activities they enjoyed.
Lucretia passed away May 9, 2024 at the Westridge Nursing Manor at the age of 96 years, 6 months and 22 days. She had lived in her own apartment until January 2024.
She is survived by her sons; Larry and Sharon Spaur, and Les and Judy Spaur. Grandchildren; Stacie, J.D.(Justin), Erin, Ross, Angela, and Shane; 17 Great Grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Fuzz” Spaur, her parents John and Tressa, Grandson, Kelly Dale Spaur, sisters; Lorraine, Leona, Lena, Louise, Lily, Louella, and Louretta; brothers, Lester, LaVernne, Levi, and Leonard, sister-in-law Margie Saltzgiber.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Knoxville EMS or to the First United Methodist Church.
