Louise Starr

Anna Louise Starr was born March 9, 1920, the first of four children of Clyde and Fannie (Britton) Smith.
She was born In Jefferson County in Belle Rive, Illinois. She graduated from Opdyke High School in 1938. Following graduation, Louise attended business college in Paducah, Kentucky. During WWII, she moved to Washington, DC and worked for the government. On April 20, 1946, Louise was united in
marriage to Donald Wesley Starr in Manchester, Iowa. The couple worked for Hyman-Michaels Railroad Salvage and lived in many cities throughout the U.S. Louise was the bookkeeper, and Don was a superintendent with the railroad salvage company. In 1968, the couple moved to Knoxville, Iowa and purchased their home on Roosevelt Street. Louise worked at the Knoxville High School cafeteria for a few years prior to retirement.
In her spare time, Louise loved flower and vegetable gardening, embroidering quilts and writing letters. She was an excellent cook and baker, and pies were her specialty. Louise liked to fix lunch every day for her granddaughters when they were in high school. Louise was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Mary Circle. She also enjoyed working at the polls during elections. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially their sporting events.
Louise passed away Thursday, September 3, 2020 at her daughter and son-in-law’s home at the age of 100 years.
She was preceded in death by her father; mother; 2 step-mothers; husband, Don, and 3 sisters.
Those left to cherish Louise’s memory include her daughter, Pat (Bob) Avitt of Knoxville; granddaughters, Stacey (Scott) Bacorn of Knoxville and Lindsey (Phil) Latessa of St. Charles, MO; great-grandchildren, Tara, Tristan, and Brittany Bacorn; Ella and Mia Latessa; several nieces, other family members, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Suncrest Hospice, or the KHS Volleyball.
