Lonnie James Brackett was born June 28, 1964 in Jefferson, Iowa the son of James and Kathy (Gilroy) Brackett.

As a young man, Lonnie lived in Jefferson, Russell and Chariton. He graduated from Chariton High School in 1982. In December of 1986 he entered the United States Navy. Lonnie served his country 4 years and 8 months before his honorable discharge in August of 1991. He then lived in Green Acres near Lake Rathbun and worked as a Nurse Assistant at the Knoxville V.A. He became the union president while working at the V.A. On October 18, 2002 Lonnie was united in marriage to Kim Piper. In 2007 he took a job as a National Representative of the American Federation of Government Employees. Lonnie represented over 76,000 government employees in his district.

Lonnie coached his boys’ soccer, baseball and football teams as they were growing up. He was a big fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed Star Wars, Superman and collecting baseball and basketball cards. He was a huge Harley-Davidson guy. Lonnie and Kim had many trips on his Harley.

Lonnie passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at his home at the age of 60 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, James; brother, Scott and grandfather, Merle.

Those left to honor Lonnie’s memory include his wife, Kim; children: Erik (Kelsey), Zac (Katy) and McKenna; brother, Stacey (Tammy); sister, Angie (Gary); grandchildren: Bodie, Rylan and Marek; mother, Kathy (Kent); grandmother, Juanita Gilroy and many other family members and friends.


Private services will be held for Lonnie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospitals or to the V.F.W. John Myers Post #3519.
