Lois Evelyn Burns was born September 24, 1933 in Kansas the daughter of Oscar and Nancy (Thomas) Grubbs.
Lois had lived in Kansas and Colorado before moving to Chariton, Iowa. On August 23, 1958 she was united in marriage to Elmer Dean Burns in Chariton, Iowa. The couple lived in Attica and Knoxville, Iowa before settling in Pleasantville, Iowa. Through the years, Lois had worked in restaurants, a clothing factory and for Gilderbloom’s Grocery in Pleasantville. She also babysat grandchildren and great-grandchildren for many years.
Lois and Dean were avid flower and vegetable gardeners and had previously won “Yard of the Month” in Pleasantville. Lois was also a talented seamstress and did alteration and repair work as well as sewing wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, and even sewed for a fashion show. She enjoyed quilting and making crafts to sell at local shows. Family was of foremost importance to Lois; she rarely missed a child’s or grandchild’s school activity. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Lois passed away Thursday, November 28, 2024 at Homestead Memory Care, in Knoxville, Iowa at the age of 91 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Dean Burns, a grandson, Edwin Lovain, a great-grandson; and siblings: Carol (Eddie) Hatcher and James Thomas.
Those left to cherish Lois’ memory include her children: Michael McCracken and wife Paulette of Nevada, Iowa; Sue Lovain and husband Douglas of Cohutta, Georgia; Patty Duffield and husband Mike of Swan, Iowa; Patrick McCracken and wife Cindy of Chariton, Iowa; Tony Dean Burns and wife Sue of Pleasantville, Iowa; and Debbie Hopp and husband Pete of Wilton, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; brother, Harold Grubbs and wife Lois of Longmont, Colorado and many other family members and friends.
The family wishes to express their overwhelming gratitude to the staff of Homestead of Knoxville for the exceptional care Lois received.
A Celebration of Life for Lois Burns, age 91 of Pleasantville, will be Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church - Family Living Center in Pleasantville, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date.
