Lillian Agnes Thill was born January 22, 1930, in Minnesota, the daughter of Clem and Agnes (Schneider) Hoch. She passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2019, at the Comfort House in Pella, at the age of 89.
Lillian moved from Minnesota at the age of five and grew up in the Lacona area attending school in Bauer and Lacona. She was united in marriage to James Thill August 18, 1948. James and Lillian celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary three days before Jim passed away August 21, 2018.
To this union five children were born—Jim, Dan, Randy, Doug, and Brenda. James and Lillian’s children...and later grandchildren and great grandchildren…brought much joy to them. Faith, Family, and Friends have always been important to Lillian. Sundays after attending church her family would enjoy spending the day together complete with a home cooked meal and lots of pies and cake for dessert. Many hours were spent together playing cards, visiting, and eating. The family farm was located ten miles south of Pleasantville with all five children graduating from Pleasantville High School.
Lillian enjoyed raising chickens, sheep, and spent many hours with her flower and vegetable gardens. In the early 1970’s Lillian’s love of gardening grew into a huge garden, selling vegetables and fruits at the Des Moines Farmers Market and Knoxville Farmers Market. Jim and Lillian continued participating as vendors at the Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market for over 43 years. Lillian was a great homemaker. She loved to bake and decorate cakes. Since the early 1960’s Lillian baked and decorated numerous wedding and birthday cakes…including wedding cakes for each of her five children, and several of the grandchildren. She loved to cook and can. Lillian’s cave would always be well stocked with canned vegetables, pizza sauce, and her signature homemade bottled ketchup.
Lillian also loved to paint on canvas…Bob Ross style. She enjoyed painting landscape scenes and sharing them with her family. She loved to crochet and do embroidery. Lillian enjoyed socializing with her friends at the Pleasantville Senior Center and always looked forward to the Bingo day each week. Outings with family and friends to the casino were always fun days.
Lillian was number 3 of 12 kids. Proceeding her in death were her husband James; her parents, Clem and Agnes Hoch; sisters Julia Snyder and Evelyn Rodgers; brothers Walter Hoch, Marvin Hoch, and Dean Hoch; and daughter-in-law Janice Thill.
Survivors include sons Jim, Dan (Cynthia), Randy (Sharon); Doug (Leanne); and daughter Brenda (Frank) Wadle all of Pleasantville; seven grandchildren: Bryan (Amy) Thill, Lisa Thill, Thomas (Tricia) Thill, John (Whitney) Thill, Jared (Elizabeth) Thill, Taylor (Austin) Darnell, Kaylea Thill; nine great grandchildren: Madyson, Riley, and Ryder Thill; Payton Thill; Braxton, Tatum, and Skylinn Thill; Kerra and Lillian Grace Thill; and sisters Carolyn Wallace of Knoxville, Lou Nickelson of Indianola, and Marilyn Orey of Indianola; and brothers Gene Hoch of Des Moines, Kenneth Hoch of Indianola, and Clemie Hoch of Lacona.
