Pastor Leroy Hal Swartzendruber
April 19, 1932 — August 28, 2020
Pastor Leroy Hal Swartzendruber was born April 19, 1932 in Morenci, Michigan the son of C.L. and Ethel (Colgrove) Swartzendruber.
He was raised in Michigan and attended Waldron, Michigan schools, graduating from high school in Fayette, Ohio. Following high school Hal entered the United States Air Force. He served from 1952 – 1956, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to his honorable discharge. On August 3, 1955 he was united in marriage to Shirley. Hal took Berean correspondence courses and became a Pastor. He pastored in Cliff, New Mexico; Bayard, New Mexico; Brownfield, Texas; Levelland, Texas and Portales, New Mexico. Following Shirley’s death in 1986, Hal married Gerda. In 1991 he took the Pastorship at First Assembly of God in Knoxville, Iowa, retiring in 1995.
Hal’s greatest joy in life was spreading the word of God, he truly loved ministering to people, even when he was in the care facility. Hal enjoyed his family immensely, especially when they played games and he won.
Hal passed away Friday, August 28, 2020 at the Cottages, in Pella, Iowa, at the age of 88 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, C.L. and Ethel Swartzendruber; wives, Shirley and Gerda; brother, Robert; grandson, Camdon Luke and sister, Arlene Evers.
Those left to cherish Hal’s memory include his children: LouAnn (Jim) Owens of Mansfield, Texas, Glen (Alana) Swartzendruber of Lubbock, Texas, Libbie (Michael) Miller of Harvey, Iowa, Kevin (Susan) Swartzendruber of Knoxville, Iowa and Keith (Christi) Swartzendruber of Justin, Texas; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters: Shirley of Adrian, Michigan and Kay of Harvey, Iowa and many other family members and friends.
A Memorial Service for Pastor Leroy Hal Swartzendruber, age 88 of Harvey, Iowa, will be held on Tuesday September 1, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home. An additional service will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at the First Assembly of God Church, in Levelland, Texas, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the Levelland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Harvey, Iowa Assembly of God Church Building Fund.
