Kathryn J. Nichols was born October 21, 1919, in Albia, Iowa, the daughter of Harrison and Harriet (Cook) Billings.
She was raised in Albia and following graduation from Albia High School, Kathryn did clerical work. On April 11, 1938, Kathryn was united in marriage to Tom Nichols. The couple eventually moved to Knoxville and Kathryn took a job at the V.A. Hospital as part of the office staff. She eventually retired from the V.A. as Secretary to the Chief of Staff. After her retirement from the V.A., Kathryn obtained her real estate license. She sold property in the Knoxville area for over 15 years, retiring in her early 80’s.
Kathryn had a strong faith and was a devout member of the First Christian Church. She was actively committed to its people and all of the church activities. She taught herself to sew and was a beautiful seamstress and found great joy in sewing for her family. Always wanting to increase her knowledge, she took computer classes, as well as piano lessons in her early 80’s. She delighted in all activities that included her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. We are grateful for her life and her Christian examples of love and generosity.
Kathryn passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2016, in Des Moines, at the age of 97 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom and siblings: Gerald Billings, Evelyn Matney and Beulah Lepley.
