Judith Marie Howard
August 12, 1937 — December 19, 2018
Judith M. (Duffy) Howard age 81 completed her earthly journey and entered her eternal home on Wednesday, December 19, 2018.
Judith was the youngest of seven children born to Dr. Martin and Margaret Duffy on August 12, 1937 in Bussey, Iowa. She attended elementary and high school in Bussey, graduating in 1955. She was active in cheerleading and basketball and was instrumental in leading her team to the first girls’ state tournament held in Veterans Memorial Auditorium. As a matter of history, her son John coached in the last state tournament held at Vets.
Judith attended Mercy School of Nursing, graduating in 1959. She began her nursing career as an instructor at Mercy and continued at Collins Hospital when the family moved to Knoxville, Iowa. For the next 32 years Judith served as an education instructor and infection control nurse at Knoxville Veterans Administration Hospital. She received numerous awards for her contributions to innovative treatment programs provided the veterans.
On August 26, 1961 Judith was united in marriage to Kenneth K. Howard and became proud parents of Ken Jr., Timothy, Ann and John. For most of their years of marriage Knoxville was home. Judith was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who always made time for her family. She supported them in every aspect of their lives and took pride in their success. She loved Christmas and the annual trips to Adventureland with her children and grandchildren provided special memories.
Judith is survived by her husband Ken, children: Ken Jr. (Ronda); Timothy; Ann (Fred) Marvelli; and John (Duana). She is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Kendra (Monte) Ritchie and Kyler Howard; Travis, Logan and Jordyn Marvelli; Kaden, Kellen and Karlyn Howard; one sister Ann Morrissey; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Bob, Pat, Martin, Tim, and John.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Knoxville. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Anthony Church, where a Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Anthony Catholic Church.
