John William Hess III also known as “Jack” and “Johnny” by his loved ones was born October 25, 1950 in Pennsylvania.
He was raised in Knoxville, Iowa. John entered the United States Army in 1970 during the Vietnam War. He attained the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge in 1982. Following his service, John moved to Santa Barbara, California where he worked for National Supply. He drove a truck and later worked in sales. He then lived in Texas for 3 years before returning to Knoxville in 1995. On February 10, 1996 John was united in marriage to Katherine Marie Pitt. John worked as a department manager for Wal-Mart for 25 years prior to retirement. In his retirement years, he worked at Knoxville True Value until his health forced him to retire in January of 2023. John was a dedicated and hard worker and was always happy to share his knowledge of many trades to his customers and friends.
In his spare time, John enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and trips to casinos. He and Kathy also traveled frequently. He enjoyed collecting things, especially Zippo lighters. John’s greatest joy was his family, especially his grandkids.
John passed away Friday, July 21, 2023 at his home at the age of 72 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Wilma Marie (Thompson) Norton; wife Kathy; infant daughter, Lisa and his brother, Jerry Stahl.
Those left to honor John’s memory include his son, Norman (Ashlie) Hess of Sandy, Utah; siblings: Larry (Betty) Stahl of Stuart, Iowa, William Norton of Sante Fe, New Mexico, Sheila (Steve) Stone of Sante Fe, New Mexico and Diane (Kevin) Spaur of Bussey, Iowa; step-children: Mishelle (Mark) Gerber and Howard (Susan) Potter; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
A memorial service for John Hess, age 72 of Knoxville, will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at Bybee & Davis Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Military Honors will be accorded at the funeral home following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date.
