John Harvey England was born July 17, 1930 in Maryville, Missouri the son of Jesse Howell England and Cecil Mildred (Cooper) England.
John graduated from College Springs, Iowa High School. He then attended Northwest Missouri State University. John earned his bachelor’s degree and in 1953 he moved to Knoxville, Iowa. John taught in the Knoxville School System until his retirement in 1986. He also coached and served as athletic director for the school. John was honored following his retirement when the junior high gymnasium was officially named “The John England Gymnasium” and he was inducted into the Knoxville Athletic Hall of Fame. In his retirement, John drove cars for local auto dealers, to and from auctions and for dealer trades. He also operated a shuttle service for Knoxville residents to and from the Kansas City and Omaha Airports.
John was dedicated to his career, his students and his fellow faculty members. He was a happy person and made friends in any situation.
John passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017 at the West Ridge Nursing & Rehab Facility at the age of 87 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Those left to honor John’s memory include his cousin, Wayne Mahood of Geneseo, New York and his countless friends in the teaching community of Knoxville and throughout Iowa.
John has been cremated and his close friends will inter his remains in Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Missouri, next to his parents on Friday, October 20, 2017. Memorials may be made to the John England Scholarship Fund through the Iowa State Savings Bank in Knoxville, Iowa.
A Celebration of John’s life will be held Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post No. 168, 314 East Robinson Street, Knoxville, Iowa 50138.
