James (Jim) Flander, 80 of Pleasantville, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, from complications of cancer and COPD. James was born on November 6, 1943, the son of Edward and Mabel Free Flander, in Eddyville, Iowa.
Jim graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the Class of 1962. While in high school, he was a bus driver for the Oskaloosa School System. He then attended William Penn College for a couple of years before going to the United States Air Force.
Jim married Linda Sue Kanselaar, and became a step-father to Dustin; they later divorced. He married Patricia Cockayne, and became the step-father to Dennis. Jim worked at farming in the early 80s, then at Renfrow Manufacturing, before taking a job at McAninch Construction in Des Moines, where he worked with his best friend, Mike DeJoode, until his retirement. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed restoring hit and miss engines with Kelly McDowell and his Uncle Robert. And, playing ball with his dog, Wren. Jim was a member Pleasant Lodge #128.
Jim is survived by his two step-sons, Dustin Flander of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and Dennis Cockayne of Des Moines; several step-grandchildren; three sisters, Lorna Flander of Oskaloosa, Luella (Lou) & (Larry) Albers of Van Horne, and Gina (Bill) Smith of What Cheer; two brothers, Don (Wilma) Flander of What Cheer, and Richard (Sue) Flander of Tracy; several nieces and nephews; and his best friend and companion, Wren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia; a sister, Rosemary Kelso; and a nephew, Brian McCurdy.
