Funeral services for Jack Sterling age 79 of Knoxville will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 12:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church. Everette Jack Sterling was born July 24, 1935 south of Knoxville, Iowa the son Everette and Madge (Wilson) Sterling.
Jack’s family moved to Lovilia when he was 3 weeks old. He graduated from Lovilia High School with the Class of 1953. On July 15, 1954 he was united in marriage to Beverly Arkema in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The couple lived in Newton and Lovilia before moving to Knoxville in 1961. Jack worked for Maytag for 39 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the UAW – local 997 and the First United Methodist Church.
Jack enjoyed cars and had owned many throughout his life. He also liked to restore vintage automobiles, and had a ’36 International pickup and a ’47 Chevy. He was a devote Christian and read his bible daily. Jack spent his entire life helping his fellow man, or as he might say, “doing for others”.
Jack passed away Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the Mercy Medical Center, in Des Moines, at the age of 79 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Lynda in 1985, his son, Mark in 1986, his sister Karen, and his brother Glenn.
Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 60 years, Beverly; son, Mike (Jill) Sterling of Gretna, NE; grandsons, Chance and Ty and Jack’s siblings, Marilyn Vanden Berg of Albia and Dick (Lily) Sterling of Knoxville.
