Harry L. Vander Veer was born December 19, 1935 in Harvey, Iowa the son of Clarence and Mabel (Brock) Vander Veer.
He was raised in Pella and graduated as a junior, partly because he was working full time at Ver Meer. Harry served in the United States Navy from 1954-1958. He was stationed primarily in Guam at a listening station, decoding messages. When Harry returned to Iowa he took a job at Pella Corp, where he was introduced to his future wife, Juliann Des Camp, by his brother, Kenneth. On September 27, 1958 Juliann and Harry were united in marriage. The couple made Knoxville their home and Harry worked for Thornton Industries as an aluminum machinist. In 1975 he took a job with 3M as a security officer and retired from there in 1994.
As a young man, Harry enjoyed hunting and bowling. He was an avid Colts and Hawkeye fan. He also enjoyed traveling to casinos. His greatest passion was coin collecting, and he found many rare examples through the years.
Harry passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at his home at the age of 85 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Juliann in 2000 and siblings, Kenneth and Carl.
Those left to honor Harry’s memory include his children: Joe, Debbie McKee, Cindy Glick and Jeff; brother, Bobby; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
A visitation for Harry Vander Veer, age 85 of Knoxville, will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Bybee & Davis Funeral Home. A service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Burial, with military honors, will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Christian Opportunity Center of Pella.
