Harold Leon Van Dyne was born February 9, 1934 in Missouri, the son of Ira and Florence (Smith) Van Dyne.
Harold was raised in Missouri until his family moved to the Corydon, Iowa area when he was in elementary school. As a young man, he served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. Following his honorable discharge, Harold returned to southern Iowa and worked railroad construction. On August 10, 1957 he was united in marriage to Gloria Mitchell in Chariton, Iowa.
