Glen Merle Vande Kamp
April 8, 1923 — January 26, 2017
Glen Merle Vande Kamp was born April 8, 1923 in Knoxville, Iowa the son of John and Gertrude (Ver Steeg) Vande Kamp.
As a young man, Glen worked in the local coal mines. On June 19, 1941 Glen was united in marriage to Bernita Mae Cowman in Princeton, Missouri. Glen served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 – 1945 and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in the Rhineland, France and Central Europe during WWII. Glen and Bernita farmed for several years before the couple moved to town in 1963. Glen was also a talented carpenter and built a home in Knoxville and dug the basement by hand. Glen bought and sold grain and operated his own elevator for several years. He later worked road construction and helped at the elevator. In their retirement years, Glen and Bernita enjoyed many winters at Pine Island, Florida and made wonderful friends along the way.
Glen passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the West Ridge Nursing & Rehab Center at the age of 93 years.
In addition to his parents, Glen was preceded in death by siblings: Harry, Clarence, Harold, Ronald and Ed Vande Kamp and Clara Graves; two daughters: Nancy in infancy and Patricia Brown; son-in-law, Roger Brown; 2 grandchildren, Terry and Timothy; a great-granddaughter, Haley and his wife, Bernita.
Those left to cherish Glen’s memory include his daughter, Mary Lou (Larry) Smith of Knoxville; two sons: Larry Glen (Patsy) Vande Kamp of Swan and Ronald Wayne (Cindy) Vande Kamp of Knoxville; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
A Funeral Service for Glen Vande Kamp, age 93 of Knoxville, will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 12:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to H.C.I. Care services – Knoxville Office or to the family of Michelle Brees.
