Gary Dewayne Major was born May 3, 1949 in Albia, Iowa the son of Thomas and Ellen (Parker) Major.
Gary attended Washington Elementary School and graduated from Albia High School. Gary honorably served his country in the United States Army, earning the rank of Sergeant. When he returned home, he attended Indian Hills Community College where he received his Associate’s Degree. Gary worked at the Knoxville V.A. Hospital in the laundry department for many years. On April 8, 2001 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Cathy in Indianola, Iowa. In later years, he drove a truck for O’Reilly’s.
In his spare time, Gary enjoyed reading and watching westerns, and he was a big John Wayne fan. He also enjoyed watching detective shows including Chicago Fire and CSI Miami. Although he may not admit it, Gary was also a great cook and enjoyed making meals for his family. He was a positive person and could always make people feel comfortable and share a good laugh. Above everything else, Gary’s number one priority in life was his family, especially his wife. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Gary passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at his home at the age of 67 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Step-father, Jim Haines; brothers, Larry and Terry and his son, John.
Those left to cherish Gary’s memory include the love of his life, Cathy; children: Harold (Amy) Major of Albia, Gary Major of Albia, David (Jess) Major of Washington, IA, Melissa McLeod of Knoxville, Matthew McLeod of Nashville and Mark (Sarah) McLeod of Dallas siblings: Linda Runyan of Indianola, Mary Moore of Knoxville and Joe (Amy) Haines of Ottumwa; grandchildren: Juston, Brad, Michael, Rebekah, Bret, Westen, Lucas, Blake, Rylan, Stephen (Teresa), Darren, Catelynn, James and Ezra; great-granddaughter, Blakely and many other family members and friends.

Visitation for Gary Major, age 67 of Melcher-Dallas, will be held on Tuesday, October 18 at the Mason Funeral Home, in Pleasantville, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Per his request, Gary will be cremated following the service and a private family burial will be in the Selection Cemetery near Albia, Iowa.
