Gary Robert Anderson
July 11, 1946 — November 21, 2022
Gary Robert Anderson was born July 11, 1946 in Iron Mountain, Michigan the son of Theodore and Ruth (Burden) Anderson.
Gary was raised in Neenah, Wisconsin where he graduated from high school. Following high school, Gary graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He earned a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. On June 8, 1968 Gary was united in marriage to Mary Schanke. To this union two sons, Mike and Matt were born. He first worked for Reynolds Aluminum before taking a job with 3M in Chicago. Gary and his family moved to Knoxville, Iowa in 1974 as the new 3M plant was being constructed. In 2003 he retired.
Gary was very active in the Knoxville community. He had served on the Planning & Zoning Board, the Recreation Commission, the Knoxville Hospital Board, Band Boosters Bingo and was a Scoutmaster. He was a long time member of the Knoxville Rotary Club and was instrumental in the Dictionary Program for local students. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and for the Wildwood Hills Ranch fishing project. Gary was also a founding and active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
In his spare time, Gary enjoyed biking, fishing, traveling and cooking for friends and family.
Gary passed away Monday, November 21, 2022 at the Comfort House, in Pella, Iowa, at the age of 76 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Ruth and a grandson, Christian Anderson.
Those left to honor Gary’s memory include his wife, Mary; sons: Mike (Kathi) and Matt (Jennifer) Anderson; grandchildren: Samantha, Garth, Mateo, Gabriel and Rebecca and many other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Knoxville Rotary Club Dictionary Project or to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
