Fred was born on July 9, 1937 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Ruby (Roff) Stapleton and ‘Fred’, Fredrick Bryan Stapleton Jr.
On July 5, 1970 he married ‘Sandi’ Sandra Louise Doughmon Lane. They divorced. Fred and Sandra had one child: Phyllis (Lane) Welshhon; Phyllis had one child, Nichole (Welshhon) Guarnere; Nichole had one son, Bryan Guarrnere.
Throughout his life, Fred enjoyed telling stories about events and life experiences. He liked talking with people, learning about them and their special activities and knowledge. He would laugh when talking about some of the shenanigans he and his brother, Larry, did and the mischief they caused. Sometimes he would tell about memorable times he had with his grandfather, Charlie Roff or things he learned from Charlie, including handling animals, especially horses, and farming activities.
Fred’s lifetime included many adventures and experiences. When he was young, he read a book, Kon Tiki, and became fascinated with sailing and boats. He even built a boat in the backyard out of sheet metal. He left home at age 16 to see what the world had to offer. He enlisted in the navy at age 17 and after two years, he reenlisted for two and a half more years. For many years after the navy, he lived and worked in California and Alaska, where he held a variety of jobs. He was a lumber jack, worked on the Alaska pipe line, was a long shore man, worked on boats and shrimp boats. He lived with the Alaska Tinket tribe for several years, where they called him, ‘Squaw-man’, because of his light coloring. While in Alaska, Fred owned and operated a fishing boat and had many fond memories of times on the ocean and in his boat. He delighted in talking about some of the ways he was able to bend the rules and get away with things that others wouldn’t even attempt.
During his life, Fred had an abundance of interests and acquired knowledge and ability that included a multitude of activities.
Fred held strong convictions and was passionate about his beliefs. He was very proud to have been baptized as a Seventh Day Adventist and tried hard to follow the beliefs he held.
In 1987, Fred moved to Chariton, Iowa. He worked as a semi driver and at an assortment of different jobs until he retired. In retirement, Fred enjoyed spending time with his dog, Brownie; day-trading; calling in to talk radio shows, and talking with people. Fred continued talking and enjoying the people he was with until the moment he passed away in Chariton, Iowa on April 7, 2023.
He will be buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Knoxville, Iowa; near his parents, grandparents, and other family members.
