Floyd Roland Stebbeds was born April 19, 1921 in Mason City, Iowa the son of Charles and Gladys (McComb) Stebbeds.
He was raised in the Payton and Grand Junction, Iowa area and graduated from Boone High School. On October 15, 1939 Floyd was united in marriage to Waunita Maxine Sifrit in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple farmed for a few years before Floyd took a job with United Airlines as a mechanic. The couple lived in Iowa and Illinois through the years as Floyd was transferred between the Des Moines airport and Midway and O’Hare in Chicago. He also served in the National Guard and as a fire fighter, EMT and Deputy Sherriff in Polk County, Iowa. Following Floyd’s retirement in 1986 he and Waunita moved to Knoxville, Iowa.
Floyd and Waunita loved to dance and would travel twice a week to different dances. They volunteered for 30 years at the Old Thresher’s Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and were members of the Good Sam’s Camping Club. In his spare time, Floyd enjoyed metal and wood working in his shop and he had also built his own working steam engine.
Floyd passed away Sunday, June 6, 2021 at West Ridge Nursing & Rehab, in Knoxville, at the age of 100 years.
In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by two infant sons: Leroy and Robert and his beloved wife, Waunita in 2012.
Those left to honor Floyd’s memory include his daughter, Pamela (Jim) Van Ryswyk of Chariton; son, Richard (Sherry) Stebbeds of Arizona; 6 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
A visitation for Floyd Stebbeds, age 100 of Knoxville, will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 17, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Bass Point Cemetery in Boone, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Care Initiatives Hospice.
