Erik Sorensen, age 85 of Monroe, Iowa, passed away October 29, 2015 at Knoxville Hospital & Clinics. His wishes were to be cremated with no memorial service.
He was born July 14, 1930 in Aabenraa, Denmark the son of Mogens and Jenssine Elizabeth Sorensen. He was raised in Aabenraa and received his formal education there.
Erik served in the military in Denmark and worked for a grain handling company in Denmark before coming to the United States. In 1952, at the age of 22 years, Erik came to visit his aunt and uncle in Monroe, Iowa and stayed for 12 years, during which time he obtained his U.S. citizenship. His aunt’s family had homesteaded a farm in Jasper County, Iowa, which Erik later farmed. Erik’s parents came from Denmark twice to visit when Erik first came to Iowa. Through the years, Erik traveled many times to Denmark to visit with family and friends. He enjoyed sharing memories of Denmark with his friends in Iowa. He was a dedicated farmer and was a member of the Danish Brotherhood of Des Moines, Iowa.
Erik is survived by his brother, Bent Sorensen of Flensburg, Germany; a niece, Anne Berit Larsen and a great-niece, Runa Larsen Kaiser of Humlebaek, Denmark; many friends in Iowa and family members and friends residing in Denmark. Erik was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Henny Wilhelnine Larsen.
