Elizabeth Jo Thompson
September 4, 1950 — February 9, 2025
Elizabeth “Betty” Jo Thompson was born September 4, 1950 in Stratton, Colorado the daughter of Leonard and Mary (Knochel) Marnell.
Betty was raised in Colorado until her family moved to Chariton, Iowa when she was in high school. Following her graduation from Chariton High School, Betty worked at a bank in Chariton. She later moved to Nebraska before taking a job at the bank in Mitchellville, Iowa. While working in Mitchellville, Betty met Mark Thompson and the two were married in July of 1983. They made their home in Polk County until retiring in 2005. Betty and Mark then moved to Knoxville, purchasing a home near Lake Red Rock.
In her spare time, Betty enjoyed reading, flower gardening and her cat.
Betty passed away Sunday, February 9, 2025 at the Comfort House, in Pella, at the age of 74 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Mary and a nephew Korey Baker.
Those left to honor Betty’s memory include her husband, Mark; son, Jason of Ohio; grandchildren, Hannah and Alex Kendall; sisters: Donna (Gordon) Baker and LuAnn (Greg) Lucas all of Newton and her dear friend, Jennifer Gray of Knoxville and many other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.
