Duane Glen Jackson was born December 19, 1940 in Newell, Iowa the son of Ralph Andrew Jackson and Carmaleta (Rogers) Jackson.
Growing up, Duane’s family lived in various towns around Iowa, including Fonda, Derby and Des Moines. As a young adult he worked in the grocery business in the Des Moines area. He spent most of his working years in the grocery business and retired from the SuperValu warehouse, in Urbandale in 2002 with over 30 years of service. Duane also worked part-time for Western Auto. In 2003 he moved to Knoxville. In his spare time, Duane enjoyed riding motorcycles, attending horse races and spending time with family and friends. He was also an avid bowler and liked watching NASCAR. As his health declined recently, he enjoyed bird watching at his home in rural Knoxville.
Duane passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at the West Ridge Nursing & Rehab Center, in Knoxville, at the age of 73 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Jerry, Donald, Andy, Jolene and Max.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Louise Gray of Knoxville; children: Cindy Lindner (Roland) and Sharon Brooks (Harold) both of McGregor, Iowa and James and Richard Jackson both of Des Moines; mother of his children, Martha Jackson of McGregor; siblings: Gerald of St. Louis, Missouri, Larry of Des Moines; Marlin of West Des Moines, Gene of Arizona and Vonda Gehlhaar of Garden Grove, Iowa; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family members and friends.
Per his wishes, Duane has been cremated and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. In honor of his life-long love of horse racing, Duane’s family will host an informal gathering at Prairie Meadows in Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday, April 27, 2014 in the Prairie Rose Room from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. At approximately 2:30 p.m. a horse race will be dedicated in Duane’s memory. All friends and family of Duane are invited, please enter the Main Casino Entrance or the South Entrance and take the elevators to the 4th floor. Your attendance will be greatly appreciated.
