Dorothy Irene Phipps was born March 29, 1941, in Indianola, Iowa, the daughter of Orlo Rex and Mary (Sergeant) Thompson.

Dorothy graduated from Indianola High School in 1959. On June 28, 1959, Dorothy was united in marriage to Dennis Owen Phipps in Indianola. The couple lived in Grand River for two years, then Baxter for seven years before moving to Pleasantville in 1969. Dorothy worked for the Pleasantville State Bank for 20 years, the I.R.S. for 15 years, and retired as the Pleasantville City Clerk in 2015.

Dorothy was active in Cub Scouts and was a Den Leader. She was also an active member of the Pleasantville Lioness Club and St. Paul’s United Methodist Women. She and Dennis were Grand Marshalls of the Pleasantville Fourth of July Parade in 2015. In her spare time, Dorothy enjoyed making ceramics and other crafts. She also made dresses for family members’ weddings, proms, and other special events. Dorothy was incredibly proud and devoted to all her family.

Dorothy passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines, at the age of 82.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dennis; son, David; and siblings: Robert Thompson and Charlotte Mosher.

Those left to cherish Dorothy’s memory include her brother, Ron (Brenda) Thompson, and children, Dudley (Kelly) Phipps of Pleasantville, Darren Phipps of Des Moines, and Dee Phipps of Pleasantville; grandchildren: Amanda (Scott) Hoffman, Ryan Phipps, Ashley (James) Boeyink, Michael (Celeste) Phipps, Christine (Alex) Burgan, Brianna (Noah) Bowman, Cori Green and Elias Phipps; great-grandchildren: Kaylee and Emma Hodnefield, Tristan, Tate and Mackenzie Hoffman, Kalika and Ambrose Green.

A Memorial Service for Dorothy Phipps, age 82, of Pleasantville, will be held Monday, February 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Mason Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The burial will be in Pleasantville Cemetery.




In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family and will be used for a tribute at Shadle Park.
