Doris Ione Smith was born September 12, 1930 in rural Knoxville, Iowa the daughter of Jess and Ione (Noftsger) DeVos.
She was raised in the Knoxville area and attended country school. On July 3, 1949 Doris was united in marriage to Norman Dean Smith in Knoxville. They always made Knoxville their home. Doris cleaned houses for over fifty years prior to her retirement. She also worked at Pella Corp for a few years.
In her spare time, Doris enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and working on her yard. She was a deeply religious person and was always helping others. Doris’ greatest joy in life was her family and she was especially proud of her grandsons and great-grandchildren.
Doris passed away Saturday, December 17, 2017 at her home at the age of 87 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dean; son, Larry and siblings: Dena Mae Deitrick, Bill DeVos, Paul Amos DeVos, Jess DeVos, Jr. (Genevieve), Dorothy Friday, Don DeVos and Richard DeVos (Karen).
Those left to honor Doris’ memory include her son, Gary and his wife Sherry Smith; grandsons: Jeff and Jeremy Smith; great-grandchildren: Payten and Haley all of Knoxville; siblings: Harold “Hap” and wife Tommalee DeVos of Cedar Rapids, Emma Koons of Des Moines and Dora Louetta Martinache of Knoxville; in-laws: Wilma DeVos of Germany and Darlene DeVos of Tama and many other family members and friends.
Funeral Services for Doris Ione Smith, age 87 of Knoxville, will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Bybee & Davis Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to H.C.I. Care Services Knoxville Office.
