Dora LuEtta Smith-Martinache was born February 16, 1929 in rural Knoxville, Iowa the daughter of Jess and Iona (Noftsger) DeVos.
She was raised in the Knoxville area and attended country school. On October 8, 1950 she married Walter Smith in Knoxville. They resided in Knoxville during their marriage. Walt passed away July 4, 1964, and Lu stayed in Knoxville. She continued caring for others’ children until she gained employment cleaning homes and offices, which she did until retirement. She later married Joseph Earl Martinache who passed away November 28, 2009. In 2014 Lu moved to assisted living in Knoxville and in August of 2018 she moved to Jefferson Place in Pella.
Lu passed away Monday, September 24, 2018 at Jefferson Place, in Pella, at the age of 89 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Walt and Earl; siblings: Dena Mae Deitrick, Bill DeVos, Paul Amos DeVos, Jess DeVos, Jr. (Genevieve), Dorothy Friday, Don DeVos, Richard DeVos (Karen) and Doris Smith.
She is survived by her sister, Emma Jean Koons of Des Moines; brother, Harold “Hap” (Tommalee) DeVos of Cedar Rapids; in-laws: Wilma DeVos of Germany, Darlene DeVos of Tama and Theda DeVos of Missouri as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
A Funeral service for Dora LuEtta Smith-Martinache, age 89 of Knoxville, will be held on Friday, September 28, 2018 at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Pella.
