Devayne Orland Bender, Sr. was born May 24, 1938 in Swan, Iowa the son of Jacob and Margaret (Hicks) Bender.
He was raised in the Swan and Pleasantville areas and graduated from Pleasantville High School. He served in the United States Army for two years, mostly stationed in Germany. Following his honorable discharge from the Army Devayne took a job with western International, in Des Moines, as a tool and die setter. He worked at the job for 22 years, Devayne then farmed for a few years before moving to Missouri. He lived in the Salem and Dixon, Missouri areas and worked for Heartland Finishing. Three years ago Devayne moved back to the Pleasantville area.
In his spare time, Devayne enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and solitaire. He also like reading his bible and sharing the word of God. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Devayne passed away Monday, January 13, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Center, in Indianola, at the age of 81 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Devayne, Jr. “D.J.” and siblings: Patty Null, Donna Stephens and Ivyl Bender.
Devayne is survived by his son, Joseph (Jackie) Bender of Knoxville; daughter, Mary Bender of Salem, Missouri; grandchildren: April, Alec, Megan, Jordan, Kalena, Jacob, Leo, Trinity and Kyler; great-grandchildren: Ollie and Payton; siblings: Mearle Bender of Pleasantville; Albert Bender of Knoxville; Pam Mathes of Melcher; Rick Bender of Pleasantville; Jeanie Gilderbloom of Pleasantville and Robert Bender of Pleasantville and many other family members and friends.
A Visitation, with family present, for Devayne O. Bender, Sr., age 81 of Pleasantville, will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Mason Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Every Step Hospice.
