Claretta Mary Sommar was born October 11, 1923 in Dallas Township, Iowa the daughter of William and Mary (Bauer) Wadle.
She was raised in the Melcher-Dallas area and attended Bauer Catholic School. On April 10, 1945 Claretta was united in marriage to Philip Joseph Sommar. The couple made their home on a farm just west of where Philip was raised. To this union four children were born: Janis, Gregory, Dwight and Claudia. Claretta was a dedicated mother and farm wife. Claretta was an excellent cook and was well known for her homemade noodles. She had a lovely voice and enjoyed singing, and playing the guitar and piano. In recent years, Claretta lived at Windsor Ridge, in Knoxville, and enjoyed baking cupcakes, donuts and cookies for her neighbors.
Claretta passed away Friday, December 23, 2022 at Knoxville Hospital & Clinics at the age of 99 years.
In addition to her parents, Claretta was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; brothers: Mathias, Robert, Leonard, Kenneth, Paul, Edwin, Leo, Donald and Claude Wadle; her sister, Helen and son-in-law, Jim Stockdale.
Those left to cherish Claretta’s memory include her children: Janis Stockdale of West Des Moines, Iowa, Gregory (Judy) Sommar of Knoxville, Dwight (Pennie) Sommar of Knoxville and Claudia (Dale) Slaughter of Blakesburg, Iowa; grandchildren: Dwight Slaughter, David Slaughter. Christina Johnson, Philip Burrell, Sean Sommar, Chad Nelson, Justin Nelson, Traci Nelson Johnson, Tonya Lovell, Jamie Schrader and Crystal Counts; many great and great-great grandchildren; her brother, William G. Wadle of Des Moines and many other family members and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Claretta Sommar, age 99 of Knoxville, will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Melcher-Dallas. A public Rosary will be recited Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church and the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that evening.
Memorials have been designated to St. Anthony Catholic Church or to Suncrest Hospice.
