Charles Douglas Woodside was born July 20, 1941, in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Charles Amos and Jean R. (Strom) Woodside. Doug spent his younger years in the Galesburg area. When he was in third grade, his family of Charles, Maxine and Martin moved to the Pleasantville area to begin farming. Doug joined 4-H and showed calves at the county and state fairs. He attended CYF and became a member of the Pleasantville Christian Church. He loved football and was a star player as running back and center linebacker as well as co-captain of the team his senior year.
He graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1959, attended AIB classes in computer operations, worked for various companies in Des Moines, and retired from Mercy Medical Center in 2007. He often worked the afternoon shift, and his day shift included raising 150 acres of corn and beans as well as grazing cattle. The farming operation continued throughout retirement. He also served in the Iowa Air National Guard for six years.
Doug married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Burnham, in 1961. They were blessed to have two children, Bryan Ray and Kayla Diane. They took a special vacation each year. A favorite was in the winter of 1989 when the family visited relatives in Arizona and California and attended the Rose Bowl Parade and game. Another favorite spot was Las Vegas. Doug enjoyed the bright lights and special attractions as well as playing blackjack. He and Beverly were fortunate to celebrate 55 years together.
Doug enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He took an annual trip to Canada with friends and always came home with his limit of walleye and northern pike. His grandchildren were very special and came for visits in the summer. There were always shopping trips and movies with pizza. Doug and Beverly made visits to watch the grandkids play soccer, baseball and basketball. What fun!
Doug passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at the age of 76 years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Beverly; children: Bryan and wife Beth of Olathe, Kansas and Kayla and husband Jim Kiesey of Long Grove, Iowa; grandchildren: Eliza and Logan Woodside and Dylan and Darek Kiesey; sister, Sandra Albaugh and husband Terry of Temecula, California; brothers: Martin Boots and wife Janet and William and wife Becky Woodside as well as many other family members and friends.
