Catherine Tommalou Estness was born March 26, 1951 in Knoxville, Iowa the daughter of Wayne and Eva Alberta (Orr) Frost.
Cathi was primarily raised in the Pleasantville area and graduated from Pleasantville High School with the Class of 1969. She was married to Tony Bethards and to this union three children, Jill, Scott and Cari, were born. The couple operated the Lil’ Duffer Restaurant in Pella for many years. Cathi and Tony later divorced. On September 27, 1986 she was united in marriage to Marvin Eric Estness. Through the years Cathi had also worked for the Brass Rail, Benoni’s, Latin King, Checkerboard and as a jackpot payee at Prairie Meadows. She and Marv lived in and remodeled a home in the country, West of Pleasantville, which they truly enjoyed. In her spare time, Cathi was an avid reader, and always made a home for stray cats. She also enjoyed listening to her wind chimes. Cathi’s greatest joy was her family, she loved spending time with all of them, especially her children and grand-children.
Cathi passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center, in Des Moines, at the age of 64 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marv on January 31, 2015 and a brother, Kenneth Clark.
Those left to cherish Cathi’s memory include her children: Jill (Brent) Poindexter of New Virginia, Iowa; Scott (Heather) Bethards of Leighton, Iowa and Cari Bethards of Pleasantville, Iowa; 4 grandchildren: Leyton, Landyn, Blake and Kensley; siblings: Richard (Maryann) Clark of Coleman, Wisconsin and Bruce (Cindy) Clark of Pleasantville and many other family members and friends.
Cathi has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials and flowers may be sent to the family home in Pleasantville. Online condolences may be left at
