Bernice Martha Hoyt was born April 16, 1930 in Oskaloosa, Iowa the daughter of Cecil and Bertha (Ryken) Stouwie.
She was raised in the Oskaloosa area and as young woman, Bernice worked at a restaurant and cleaned houses. On April 14, 1949 she was united in marriage to Robert Lee Hoyt. To this union four children: Barbara, Beverly, Brice and Brent were born. The couple farmed in Oskaloosa and Melcher before moving to Pleasantville in 1964 where they continued their farming and milking operation. In addition to being a farm wife, Bernice worked at 10X rom 1971-1975, the Pleasantville High School from 1975-1979 and at the Knoxville V.A. dietetics program from 1979 until retiring in 1996.
Bernice was an excellent seamstress and was well known for her chocolate chip cookies. She also enjoyed volunteering at the nursing home in Pleasantville. She was very proud of her family and loved spending time with them.
Bernice passed away Sunday, March 28, 2021 at Mercy Hospice, in Johnston, Iowa, at the age of 90 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; son, Brent and siblings: Raymond, Gerrit, Jane, Helen, Marjorie, Wilma and Cecil, Jr.
Those left to cherish Bernice’s memory include her children: Barbara (Dennis) Isenberg of Indianola, Beverly (Daryl) Bailey of Woodbury, Minnesota, Brice (Kris) Hoyt of Traer, Iowa and daughter-in-law, Freda Hoyt of Pleasantville; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; siblings: Elner Spoelstra, Betty Bruxvoort and Leona Veldhuizen and many other family members and friends.
A funeral service for Bernice Hoyt, age 90 of Pleasantville, will be held Thursday, April 1, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at Mason Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Spurgeon Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Mercy One Hospice of Johnston, Iowa.
