Arleta Jean Voyce was born March 5, 1939 in Corning, Iowa the daughter of Leonard and Iola (Symonds) Steele.
She was raised in Knoxville, Iowa. During high school, Arleta wrote a weekly school newsletter and worked at Braida Grocery Store. She graduated with the Class of 1957 and became employed by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
After a courtship of rollerskating and square dancing, Arleta was united in marriage to Rodney Gene Voyce on March 12, 1961. The couple always made Knoxville their home.
She transitioned into her role as a mother & homemaker and worked as a lunch lady at West Elementary and at the County Auditor’s Office. Arleta later took a job at Knoxville Raceway in the concession stand and eventually moved to the ticket office. She started as a bookkeeper during the week and was an official scorer and ran the time clock on race nights. Arleta ran the ticket office until her retirement in 2011, but continued to work on race nights for several more years. She was a welcome smile and recognized voice to race fans all over the world.
Arleta passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at the Cottages, in Pella, Iowa, at the age of 84 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene and brothers: Merrell, Roy and Lowell Steele.
Those left to cherish Arleta’s memory include her daughters: Elaine Voyce (Lyndon Schroeder) of Urbandale, Iowa, Teresa (Bill) Morgan of Knoxville, Brenda (Gale) Happy of Maybee, Michigan and Vickie (Rojelio) Ramirez of Weslaco, Texas; grandchildren: Mason Schroeder, Reid Schroeder, Alissa VanKlootwyk, Heath VanKlootwyk, Victor Voyce, Kaylee Ramirez, Beth Morgan, Whittney Lee, Taylor Morgan, Richard Ramirez, Roy Ramirez and Melinda Savage; brother, Bob Steele of Knoxville and many great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marion County 4-H Foundation or to the Crossroads Gospel Church.
