Arthur Douglas Nichols was born September 8, 1938 in Dunreath, Iowa the son of Arthur and Lylia (Deitrick) Nichols.

Doug was raised in the Red Rock, Iowa area and attended Monroe schools. As a young man, he worked for the railroad and later at Firestone. On June 22, 1957 Doug was united in marriage to Colleen Louise “Coke” Hendrix. Doug then worked for local filling stations in Knoxville and later for Goff & Nash. He then took a job at the Knoxville 3M plant, retiring in 1997. He also worked on cars, in the evenings, with Dwayne Robuck for many years.

Doug was an ordained Priest and served as an Elder at the Community of Christ Church for most of his adult life.

In his spare time, Doug enjoyed sprint cars, motorcycles and baseball. He also looked forward to morning coffee time with his friends. More than anything, the moments spent with his grandchildren were what he loved most. He and Coke also loved to travel and square dance. Doug was famous for telling jokes, which he always laughed at.

Doug passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at the Oskaloosa Care Center at the age of 85 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Colleen “Coke”.

Those left to honor Doug’s memory include his children: Douglas Allen (Luann) and Tamela “Tammy” Batterson (Craig); 5 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; 14 step-great grandchildren; siblings: Diane “Bill” McDonald, Linda “Dean” Hicks and Sam “Cathy” Nichols and many other family members and friends.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Knoxville Baseball Club.
